Election Season Etiquette for Political Signage

The City of Summerville has received several concerns and questions from political candidates, political parties, and citizens concerning campaign signs on public right- of -ways. The city’s code of ordinances states that:

Section 9.5 Subsection V

Political Signs: Signs whereby the public is to be informed regarding a specific political event or candidate(s) or issue(s).

  1. Political signs shall be located a minimum of one foot from any publicly maintained right-of-way or easement, shall not be located in any medians, and must be with proper authorization of the property owner(s).
  2. Political signs shall be limited to a copy area not to exceed thirty-two (32) square feet; however, this shall not be deemed to disallow the use of general outdoor advertising signs.
  3. Political signs shall be allowed in all zoning districts.
  4. Prior to removal of signs in violation, except for signs on the right-of-way or those signs creating a traffic or safety hazard, (whether erector or user) shall be given at least 48 hours notice to remedy their violation.

Candidates and political parties will have until Monday, April 4, 2016 to remove or relocate their signs; after such time, city staff will be advised to remove signs from the public right-of-way. The city will store the signs at the city maintenance garage. Candidates or political party affiliates may pick up their signs between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Monday – Friday. For questions or concerns regarding the ordinance, please contact City Hall at (706) 859 -0900.
