A third autopsy has been completed on the death of Kendrick Johnson, 17, which states new information that Johnson died of blunt force trauma.
These findings counter what investigators have ruled which was that Johnson fell into a wrestling mat to obtain a shoe and died of positional asphyxiation in 2013. The most recent findings are consistent with the first independent autopsy paid for by the teen’s parents. Johnson’s body was found inside a rolled-up wrestling mat at Lowndes County High School in Valdosta nearly six years ago and was ruled as an accident by the local sheriff’s office.
The parents of Kendrick Johnson, Jackie and Kenneth Johnson, have always maintained that their son’s death was related to foul play – his death gained national attention.
According to local reports from the Valdosta Daily Times and WALB-TV, the third autopsy reveals that Johnson received blunt force trauma to the right neck and right thorax as the official cause of death. The parents of Johnson ordered a second autopsy of their son’s body later that year after his organs went missing and his body was stuffed with newspaper.
A federal review of the case ruled in 2016 that Johnson’s death was accidental with the Department of Justice stating it didn’t find “sufficient evidence to support federal criminal charges.”
“After an extensive investigation into this tragic event, federal investigators determined that there is insufficient evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that someone or a group of people willfully violated Kendrick Johnson’s civil rights or committed any other prosecutable federal crime,” the closed case reads.
The parents of Johnson filed a $100 million wrongful death suit against the state and a local family linked to the case. The Johnsons lost the lawsuit and were forced to pay $200,000 in legal fees to the family mentioned in the civil suit.
On Friday, the teen’s mother wrote on her Facebook page that “Kendrick KJ Johnson WAS MURDERED but we already knew that.”
It is not known what the family of Kendrick Johnson will do with findings of the third autopsy.
