National Guardsman from Georgia passes away after non-combat incident in Afghanistan

A non-combat incident in Afghanistan on Monday claimed the life of a National Guardsman from Georgia, authorities say.

According to the U.S. Department of Defense, 22-year-old Spc. Miguel L. Holmes, of Hinesville, died in the Nangarhar Province from “wounds sustained from a non-combat incident.” The Department said that the incident remains under investigation, but Holmes is the second soldier from Georgia killed overseas as part of Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

Holmes was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 118th Field Artillery Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team based in Savannah, which is within the Georgia Army National Guard, according to the Department of Defense.
