It’s been a lengthy closure, but the reopening is just in time for the holiday travel season.
One mile and a half worth of new water line later, Georgia DOT will reopen both Interstate 16 Rest Area 87 and 88 in Laurens County Monday, Nov. 18.
The City of Dublin has successfully completed extensive water line work since the facilities closed down due to unsatisfactory water pressure conditions in late February 2019, GDOT reported in a news release. The rest stop was initially supposed to be open much sooner. 13WMAZ reported in May:
“Right now we’re meeting with a contractor. He’s already ordered his material, his pipe, and I’m hoping that it’ll all start rolling, and we’ll get started within the next two weeks,” City of Dublin’s Utility Director Michael Clay said.
They’re going to put in a new water line that’s made of sturdier material, which should hold for 40 to 50 years.
“If the drill goes successful, because we’re drilling about 1800 feet. If the drill goes successful, we should be able to get it in within a seven-day time period,” Clay said.
The Department of Transportation apologized in a press release Thursday for the traveling inconvenience, but expressed its thankfulness for great local partners who plowed through challenges to allow service restoration before the busy holiday season.

Those rest areas have been closed ALOT longer than since Feb 2019. I can remember passing by both summer of 2018 and they were both closed. Make sure you get your facts straight before going public with an article. Dont lie to everyone.

Take a deep breath. It’s from a press release from the Georgia Department of Transportation, as noted in the article. If you’d like to complain to someone about the facts of the press release, Kyle Collins is the communications liason for GDOT in District 2. His number is 478.232.3331.

It may have been from a press release, but “AllonGeorgia” added some text to the release, and then posted it themselves. They are still responsible for fact checking the content before making it pu lic and attaching their name to it. If we are going off the premise that a media outlet can say whatever they want and claim that it was based on a press release, they could rename themselves CBS, CNN, etc. By doing what they have done, they have made themselves no better than the “other” media outlets that put out unreliable garbage. And telling me to “take a deep breath”…..? That’s literally the equivalent of attempting to silence me from making public the fact that this entire article is based on a lie…….seems like another move to silence anyone that disagrees with the “facts” released by the media. Thanks for making it known that you -Jessica Szilagyi- are against the freedom of speech and attempt to silence those that point out incorrect statements in articles.

Bless it. I said “It’s from a press release,” not “it’s a press release.” The statement about the time the rest stop was closed is from a press release. that’s why it says “according to…”
No one told you to be quiet or that you should be silent. I said take a deep breath…because you’re awfully wound up about rest stops. I also work for AllOnGeorgia (A simple click of any type on the website shows that 🙂 I stand behind my comments, which is why I use my full name) and if I wanted to silence you, I wouldn’t approve your comments. [By the way, this isn’t a government site – it’s a private entity and you have no ‘freedom of speech here,’ your comments are a privilege and one we enjoy from all of our readers – positive or not]
If your criticism had been presented constructively, it likely would have been received differently…but that isn’t how you approached this, so you shouldn’t be surprised when people respond to your tone and approach with the same tone and approach.
I will say you are extremely blessed to have rest stops as your biggest problem. A lot of people have it much worse. Have a great Thanksgiving and enjoy those rest stops re-opening tomorrow!
