An act by a Good Samaritan helped a victim get the medical care she needed which led Statesboro Police to arrest two people reportedly responsible for the assault, all while Statesboro Police Department employees cared for the victim’s children.
In a press release issued Wednesday, the Statesboro Police Department said a female victim was brought to SPD by a Good Samaritan on Tuesday afternoon.
That Samaritan had witnessed the victim being assaulted on South College Street, had intervened, and then given her a ride to the PD. The victim was transported by EMS to East Georgia Regional Medical Center with head injuries and burns to her body. The victim indicated that she lived at an apartment in the 600 block of south College Street with her minor children and with her abusers.
Officers were dispatched to the apartment and retrieved the victim’s children who were transported to the police department where they were fed and cared for by dispatchers and administrative staff until a family member could get to the PD, the news release said.
Detectives with the Statesboro Police Department began investigating the assault, which they discovered had occurred over a period of several days.
After investigating, Statesboro Police arrested Tawain Gunter (38 years old, South College St, Statesboro) and her 15-year-old juvenile son. Both were charged with Aggravated Assault-FV. Gunter was taken to the Bulloch County Jail and the juvenile to the Claxton Regional Youth Detention Center.
SPD says the two had been allowed to move in with the victim after they were homeless in Tampa, Florida.
The Department of Family and Children Services was also notified and is conducting its own investigation.
