Yesterday, the Women’s Legislative Caucus hosted an event to recognize House Speaker Jan Jones as the first female House Speaker in Georgia’s history. Women’s Legislative Caucus Co-Chairs, Sen. Sally Harrell (D – Atlanta) and Rep. Kimberly Alexander (D – Atlanta), along with members of the bipartisan bicameral caucus, honored Speaker Jones for breaking barriers for women and girls in Georgia and for her steady leadership after assuming the position during the difficult time following Speaker David Ralston’s unexpected death in November 2022.
“We’ve all heard the statement, ‘He looks so Presidential.’ But what does that mean? It means he looks like Presidents who have gone before, or statesmen who have gone before, or Speakers who have gone before. They see a man. That’s why it is so important that we stand here today to recognize this moment in time,” said Sen. Harrell during the ceremony. “Thank you, Speaker Jones, for putting a female face on the Speaker of the House. Young girls and young women are watching.”
The Caucus presented Jones with a dozen white roses, a symbol of women’s suffrage, and a plaque to commemorate the historic milestone.
