Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson Returns Millions in Unremitted Funds to the Georgia State Treasury

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson hosted a press conference at the Georgia Department of Labor to reveal the findings of a comprehensive internal audit, which uncovered $105,170,178.20 in unremitted funds that began accumulating in fiscal year 2014 during the tenure of former Labor Commissioner Mark Butler.

These funds were a combination of Administrative Assessment fees ($20,829,614.53), Employer Penalties ($63,139, 053.96), and Interest fees ($21,201,509.71) that were never remitted to the Georgia State Treasury. As required by law, Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson authorized the full transfer of these funds, which totaled $105,170,178.20, to the treasury on August 3, 2023.

Commissioner Bruce Thompson immediately began a sweeping overhaul of the department after assuming office in January 2023, identifying deficiencies and weaknesses that tarnished the agency’s reputation. Part of this initiative included a comprehensive exploration of GDOL’s fraud and unemployment insurance system vulnerabilities aimed at rebuilding confidence and ushering in a new era of credibility at the department.

This investigation led to the discovery of millions in unremitted funds, further underscoring Commissioner Thompson’s commitment to investigating and resolving these inefficiencies – leaving no room for fraud or deceitful activity.

“I am extremely grateful to the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, the Georgia Attorney General, the Georgia Office of Inspector General, the Georgia Department of Audits & Accounts, the U.S. DOL, and the U.S. Office of Inspector General for their assistance, cooperation, and resolve to conduct these investigations,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “This agency will no longer be shrouded in secrecy and isolation but fully cooperate with fellow state agencies and authorities to identify all fraud and corruption associated with the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund and the department.

“No one is above the law, and I hope everyone connected to this investigation voluntarily and openly cooperates with officials as we seek to put this dark history behind us.”

Thursday’s landmark announcement marks a significant step toward restoring accountability and transparency at the Georgia Department of Labor under the leadership of Commissioner Bruce Thompson.

The ongoing investigation into the alleged fraudulent activities remains exhaustive as state and federal authorities work to address the implications associated with these findings. Updates will be provided as new developments unfold.
