The Walker County Board of Commissioners acted on several housekeeping items at their first meeting of the new year, electing a new vice chair and revising their meeting schedule.
The Board unanimously selected District 2 Commissioner Mark Askew to serve as vice chair for 2024. Askew previously served in this position in 2021. The vice chair presides at meetings of the board in the absence of Chairman Shannon Whitfield.
Commissioners also settled on a new meeting time, moving the start time forward 30 minutes to 6:30 p.m. Board meetings will continue to be held on the second and fourth Thursday of each month, with the exception of Thanksgiving, at Courthouse Annex III, which is located at 201 South Main Street in LaFayette. The next meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 8.
Along with these two required actions, the Board set the qualifying fee for each county office to be filled in the 2024 general primary and general election. Fees are 3% of the minimum salary for the office. The chair, district 3 and district 4 seats on the Board of Commissioners will be on the ballot this year, as well as sheriff, tax commissioner, clerk of courts and several judicial positions.
Candidate qualifying for county offices takes place March 4 through March 8. Additional information is available at walkercountyelections.com.
