Bulloch County Special Olympics April 19 at Statesboro High

The Bulloch County Special Olympics is Friday, April 19, at Statesboro High School’s Womack Field.

The Opening Ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m., with a parade of athletes, and a senior recognition at 11:45 a.m., will end the festivities. Buttons ($3) and t-shirts ($18) are for sale before and during the event, and all proceeds go to support the local Special Olympics program.

Athletes will take part in track and field events with a 50-meter, 100-meter, 50-meter wheelchair, and half-lap relay options; There will also be throwing sports such as javelin, softball, and tennis. Athletes may also enjoy an Olympic Village made possible by community volunteers and sponsors.

Woody’s Shirts and Scrubs of Statesboro has made this year’s commemorative t-shirt for athletes, and they are on sale before and during the event for $18. The Statesboro Service League is providing bottled water, and the Bulloch County Sheriff’s Office is preparing hotdogs on site for athletes and faculty. Catalyst Promotions has also donated the sign for the senior recognition. Other business supporters include Evan Price Photography, Awards South, Statesboro High School, Frazier’s Flowers, and Bulloch County School’s School Improvement and Student Support & Wellness departments. Thank you to the many varsity athletes from Bulloch County Schools’ high schools who will also volunteer.

The event is coordinated by Kiersten Morrison, who serves as the Bulloch County Special Olympics chairman, and she is a special education teacher at Statesboro High School. She is supported by special education teachers and other faculty from around the school district, plus parents, student volunteers, and community volunteers.
