Get Ready for the Buzz: Cicadas to Emerge

A few counties across North and West GA will see the 13 year Cicada Brood XIX emerge this Spring

Trillions of periodical cicadas will emerge this spring, making loud buzzing and molted exoskeletons. Depending on the location and soil temperature, the 13-year and 17-year cicadas will emerge in May or early June 2024. The 13-year cicadas will emerge in Georgia, and the 17-year cicadas will appear in Illinois.

Cicadas mate, molt, and die, leaving behind their offspring to bury themselves until the next cycle.

They only last a month above ground and are not harmful.

In 2076, the two largest broods will emerge together, and hundreds of trillions, or even quadrillions, of cicadas are expected. The emergence will primarily be seen in Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
