Claxton Police Chief Edward Oglesbee to Retire

The Claxton City Council accepted the retirement resignation of longtime city police chief Edward Oglesbee at the council meeting Monday night.

Oglesbee’s last day will be January 3. He has been the police chief since November of 1976, and his tenure with the department dates back forty-five years in 1972 when the department had four officers and a chief.

Mayor Branch read his letter to Council, in which Oglesbee called his retirement “bittersweet.” “My wife Linda and I want to thank all the mayors and council I’ve served under. I’ve been blessed to serve and may God continue to bless the city of Claxton.”

Oglesbee spoke briefly at the meeting, reminiscing on his time with the city.

Members of the police department were in attendance as was former Mayor Luther Royal.

Oglesbee will be recognized for his service to the city at a later date to be determined by the council.
