Trion Lady Dogs Lead Region 6A

This past Thursday, September 24th, the Trion High School Lady Dogs softball team improved their overall record to 16-2, and their region record to 11-1. The Lady Dogs battled the Region 6A leader, Christian Heritage, and sent the Lions home with a 6-0 shut out loss.

To start the game, senior pitcher, Peyton Henderson took the mound and retired the first three batters, to get the momentum going in the right direction. The Lady Bulldog’s scoring began when Henderson singled up the middle, followed by a double from Junior, Lindsey Shepherd. With runners on second and third, Sophomore Josie Maddux, singled to drive in the first two runs of the game.

Sophomore, Shayla Youngblood led off the fourth inning with a single. Peyton Henderson laid down a sacrifice bunt, to move Youngblood to second base. Lindsey Shepherd grounded out, but Youngblood advanced to third on the throw. Senior, Madison Martin singled to score Youngblood, which gave the Lady Dog’s their third run of the game.

To begin the bottom of the fifth inning, Senior, Jaden Morrison bunted safe to first, but on a throwing error, she advanced all the way to third. Junior, Kiki Evans singled, which allowed Morrison to score the fourth run of the game. Shayla Youngblood continued the energy with an RBI triple, scoring Evans. Youngblood stole home on a wild pitch to make it a six to nothing game.

The rest of the game was filled with excellent defensive plays. Senior, Kerrigan Ramsey had a memorable play, where she took a hard line drive to center-field and made a long, accurate throw to home, allowing Senior, Rayven Lawrence to tag the runner for the third out of the inning, which preserved the Lady Dogs shut out. In the top of the seventh, Shepherd went to the mound, in relief of Henderson. The Lady Dogs got three quick outs to secure the win.

This victory gave the Bulldogs the front-runner position in region play. With eight more regular season games, the Dogs need to bring home wins, in order to be crowned Region 6A champions, and advance to first round of the state playoffs. This has been an outstanding season for the six seniors, and they hope to continue this winning journey for the rest of the year.
