Preps recap: This week in Glynn County sports

The Glynn Academy boys soccer team picked up a non-region win Friday night at Hilton Head High, posting a 2-0 victory over the home school.

Scoring Glynn’s goals were Ben Alexander and Truman Antah. Both players also had assists.

Walker Butin recorded the shutout in goal.

The Red Terrors improved to 11-2-1 with the win. They play at Benedictine next Friday.

Meantime, the GA girls did not play on Friday night. The undefeated Lady Terrors will play at May River on Tuesday before going to St. Vincent’s Academy in Savannah on Friday.

Below is a recap of the area high school sports in the past week.

Soccer

Brunswick: The Brunswick boys and girls split a pair of matches Friday against Wayne County.

Playing at home, the Pirates decked Wayne County 4-1 in non-region action, but the Lady Pirates fell

by that same 4-1 score.

For the BHS boys (7-5-3), March Grovner had two goals and an assist. Fernando Sanchez and Mason Palmer also scored for the Pirates. Palmer also had an assist.

In the girls match, the Lady Pirates (5-10) tied the score 1-1 in the second half on a goal by Jordan Caprino which came off a free kick by Emily Spence.

The Lady Yellow Jackets would break the tie and run away by scoring the game’s final three goals.

Baseball

Frederica Academy: The Knights have been hosting the Island Classic this week which features several teams playing games on St. Simons Island.

The Knights won both of their Friday games, stomping past Valwood 11-1 and also defeating Terrell Academy 12-8.

The Knights are 12-4 after the two wins. They were scheduled to round out tournament play against John Milledge Academy on Saturday night.

In the win over Valwood, Deke Jernigan led the Frederica offense with three hits while also scoring three runs. He drove home the winning run in the bottom of the fifth to end the game early by the mercy rule.

Also for the Knights, Harry Veal and Henry Jamieson had two hits and two RBIs.

Trey Thompson was the winning pitcher for Frederica. He allowed just one unearned run while striking out five and giving up just two hits.

Brunswick: The Pirates swept their Region 2-AAAAAA series this past week against Bradwell Institute.

The BHS pitchers did not allow a run in the three games as the Pirates won by scores of 4-0, 7-0 and 13-0.

The Pirates ran their record to 16-9 overall and 6-3 region.

In Monday’s opening game, Harrison Trawick pitched six scoreless innings for the Pirates.

In the middle game on Wednesday, Marshall Cox also pitched six scoreless frames for the Pirates.

Trawick and Hunter Goff hit back-to-back home runs in the fifth which gave the Pirates a 5-0 lead. Both players also drove in runs in the sixth.

The series finale was played Thursday with Jones Jobe allowing just one hit over the first four innings while fanning seven in the game which went just five innings due to the mercy rule.

Trawick drove in six of Brunswick’s runs. He hit a two-run homer in the second and drove in three runs with a bases-loaded triple in the third. He singled in the sixth to drive in his final run of the night.

The Pirates have a bye week in region this week, so they will face South Effingham twice in non-region games. They go to Rincon to face the Mustangs on Tuesday and will host them on Thursday.

Glynn Academy: The Red Terrors avoided a sweep in their Region 2-AAAAAA series this week against Effingham, rolling past the Rebels 12-3 at home on Friday.

Glynn dropped the first two games of the series, losing 4-0 on Monday and 4-3 on Wednesday. The Rebels scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh of Wednesday’s game.

In Friday’s game, the Terrors scored seven runs in the first. Hunter Hall drove in Glynn’s first two runs, a single by Griffin Bates brought home the third run, a throwing error led to the Terrors’ fourth run and Bo Pierce made it 5-0 with a run-scoring single.

Also, GA leadoff batter Randon Jernigan walked with the bases loaded in his second at-bat in the inning to score a run and a sacrifice fly by Will Bowdoin brought home the final run in the inning.

The Terrors got five more runs in the third. Bowdoin drove in the first two, Paul Hegeman brough him home with a double, Hall scored Hegeman with a hit off the outfield fence and Hall would come home on a single by Hartman for the 12-0 cushion.

Bowdoin was the winning pitcher for the Terrors, working the first six innings.

Glynn, now 19-4 overall and 6-3 region, faces Richmond Hill in three region games next week.
