2 Challenge Moore to Become Next Mayor of Statesboro

Within hours of the qualification deadline, Jonathan McCollar has officially entered the race to become the next Mayor of the City of Statesboro. He enters the mayoral race, fielding two other candidates, current Mayor Jan Moore and an unexpected entry by John Grotheer.

Mr. McCollar is not unfamiliar to the City of Statesboro, as he ran for Mayor in 2013 against then-Mayor Joe Brannon, current Mayor Jan Moore, and Bill Thomas. McCollar and Moore both received the highest vote totals at 563 (35.5%) and 630 (39.75%), respectfully. They then wrapped up the election in a well-fought December runoff where Moore ultimately won by less than 100 votes.

The final results: Moore 980 (52%) to McCollar 887 (48%).

Despite the 2013 results, McCollar seems just as energized by what’s going on in the city today as he was back then. “Statesboro is a city that I love dearly,” he commented. “It is a special place with special people. The people here have sown generously into my life and I have tried to repay it through public service. I am compelled to campaign to be the next mayor of the city of Statesboro simply because I believe that it is time to put the “People Over Politics”. Nearly half of the people are living at or below poverty and we are seeing violent crime grow around our beloved University. I believe that it is time for the city to have a leader that is going to work for the people, provided visionary leadership, and apply creative solutions to the problems that the city is facing. I love this city, its people, and will forever be its faithful servant.”

Grotheer, an accountant, previously served as an interim county administrator in Bryan County.

Election will be held this year on Tuesday, November 7.
