Governor Kemp held his weekly briefing yesterday on the COVID-19 response statewide. He lifted widespread restrictions in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on Thursday, reopening even more venues and lifting the shelter in place orders for people over 65-years-old.

The shelter in place order ends effectively immediately for any residents or visitors to Georgia who are over 65 years old unless they are in a nursing home, in a long-term care facility or have health issues. Gatherings of 50 people are now allowed if people are at least six feet apart. There is no longer a maximum of people who can dine together in restaurants as one party. Workers in restaurants now only need to wear face coverings when interactive with customers. The governor’s emergency order goes into effect on June 16 at midnight and runs through June 30 but could be extended.

The commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration on Sunday urged Americans observing Memorial Day weekend to follow federal guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of the coronavirus, saying the deadly virus “is not yet contained.”

Bulloch County confirmed positives are up again by 3 since yesterday, our hospitalizations remain low which is a good sign. The increase in testing would also contribute to that increase.

Georgia has a new hot spot. Hancock had 170 reported cases of COVID-19 as of Wednesday, the fourth-highest number per capita in the state. On Tuesday, a Hancock nursing home reported 14 new deaths to the state public health department, bringing the county total to at least 19.

While Bulloch County confirmed positives are up by 3 since yesterday, our hospitalizations remain low which is a good sign. The increase in testing would also contribute to that increase. With aggressive testing and contact tracing, people can still be at risk when going out. The Department of Public Health is working hard to implement both. Social gatherings will be limited to a few people and wearing masks in public will likely remain necessary. If you are headed to the Beach or Lake this weekend, expect a strong law enforcement presence. State Patrol and DNR will be operating at near full strength throughout the holiday weekend.

The state has some good news also because the daily average of new confirmed COVID-19 positive cases statewide in the last 7 days went from 585 to 154. We could see a jump in this number if the higher number of tests (100k) in the last week results in more confirmed cases when the test results are known.
