Rep. Rick Allen Invites GA12 Students to Participate in Congressional Art Competition

U.S. Congressman Rick Allen again announced the opportunity for young Georgians in the 12^th Congressional District to participate in the 2017 Congressional Art Competition. The competition is open to high school students, grades 9-12, who live or attend school in the 12^th District. The winner will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year, alongside other winning entries from across the country, and will also be invited to attend a special ceremony in Washington, D.C.

The first, second, and third runner up winner’s artwork will be showcased in Congressman Allen’s Washington, D.C. and district offices from May 2017 – May 2018. In addition, there will be a “People’s Choice Award” winner, which constituents will choose by visiting Congressman Allen’s Facebook page and voting on submitted entries. Congressman Allen will announce all winners at an awards ceremony at the Georgia Carolina State Fair on October 20, 2016.

“The Congressional Art Competition is a great opportunity to highlight the creativity and artistic talents of high school students in Georgia and across the country,” said Congressman Allen. “I look forward to seeing submissions from our young artists and the special ways they have chosen to highlight the 12^th District of Georgia. I encourage all interested high school students to take part in this special tradition.”

Artwork submitted must represent images that depict a scene such as a landscape, industry, etc. from the 12^th District of Georgia,  must be original in concept, design and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws. Students may submit one piece of artwork for entry in the competition from October 3^rd-5^th at one of the following drop-off locations. Entries should have the student’s release form attached to the back of his or her artwork when submitted.

• Vidalia Heritage Academy Upper School: 207 East Second Street, Vidalia, Georgia 30474
• Statesboro High School: 10 Lester Rd, Statesboro, GA 30458 (front office from 8am-3pm)
• Emanuel County Institute: 102 S. College St, Twin City, GA 30471

Please note: Artwork must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed. It is necessary that all artwork be reviewed by the panel chaired by the Architect of the Capitol and any portion not in consonance with the Commission’s policy will be omitted from the exhibit. If an entrant is unsure about whether a piece of artwork is acceptable, he or she should contact the staff of his or her Member of Congress; the congressional staff can speak with personnel who can determine whether the artwork would be accepted.
