The Atlanta Braves are off to worst start in history, and Beckham returns to lineup

The Atlanta Braves are off to the worst start ever. Literally.

The Atlanta Braves are off to the worst start ever. Literally. It’s the worst start in Atlanta Braves history. And, their home record is the worst start by any team in the majors in over one hundred years.

The team is just downright bad. Like, historically bad. The 1980 Padres only won 23 games in which they hit a home run, the fewest wins in a 162 game season in games in which the team hit a home run. So far, the 2016 Braves have one game. This is how bad they are.

Every team who has played at Turner Field this year has won at least two games there. Except the Atlanta Braves.

Freddie Freeman is the only Atlanta Brave with more home runs this year than Bartolo Colon.

USATODAY’s Bob Nightengale recently sat down with Vice Chairman John Schuerholz about the team’s historically bad start.

“I’d be disingenuous if I didn’t say it’s tough to go through what we’re going through now, to be brutally honest with you,” Schuerholz told USA TODAY Sports. “It’s disappointing for all of us and for those who are Braves fans and have never had to see us endure this.

“The expectation was just so different than this. We didn’t expect to blow the doors off, but we did expect to be competitive. We did expect to have an influx of young players that were exciting and showed a glimpse of the future.

“We are celebrating the last year at Turner Field, and we wanted to give a thank you to our fans for their support. Now, there’s a wonderment, ‘What’s wrong with our beloved Braves? We cry for them. We hurt for them. What’s going on?’

“This just hasn’t worked out the way we thought it would be, and now we’re all asking questions.”

Gordon Beckham will return off the 15-day disabled list today. Beckham has been out of action after straining his hamstring. Before the injury, he seemed to be really heating up and was one of the very few good bats in the lineup.

To make room for Beckham on the roster, the Braves will designate Matt Tuiasosopo for assignment.

I hadn’t thought about the Braves being the only team who hasn’t won more than one game at Turner Field so far. I doubt that will have changed by the time Philly leaves town this week. Silver lining: at least we’re getting a really good draft pick next summer?
