Deputies Receive Life Saving Awards for saving Chattooga County Resident Bo Ray’s Life

Deputies Jonathan Williams and Anthony Buckner of the Unicoi County Sheriff’s Office in Tennessee were recently honored with Life Saving Awards for the life-saving efforts they provide to Chattooga County resident Bo Ray.

Bo Ray, age 42, a lifelong Chattooga County, Georgia resident, was traveling through Unicoi County, Tennessee, on July 19th on Highway 81 when he suffered a heart attack. He was driving a Dodge dually pulling a gooseneck trailer with a truck he had just bought on it when Ray told his wife, Amy, he was feeling funny well and went unconscious.

The truck veered to the left, drifting off towards a steep embankment. Amy grabbed the steering wheel and stopped the truck and trailer by running off the highway on the other side into a rocky embankment.

Ray had suffered a heart attack, causing him to lose control of his large truck. Amy’s quick thinking and action kept the couple from running off the other side of the steep mountain road.

Upon arriving at the scene, Officers Williams and Buckner found Ray unconscious and without any vital signs. They immediately began administering CPR and continued for over twenty minutes without giving up. Eventually, they were able to restore a heartbeat. Ray was then transported to the hospital, where medical professionals stated that without the officers’ quick response and training, Ray would not be alive today.

Bo and Amy were present when the officers were presented with the life-saving awards.

“I had three angels, the two officers, and my wife,” Bo told AllOnGeorgia.

“If I had been by myself that night, I would have died and probably would not have been found for a while. When I passed out, Amy pulled the truck into the rock wall and got it stopped to keep us from going over the edge of a couple of hundred-foot drop and then called 911 while trying to get me back breathing herself. I’m proud to say everything worked out that night for a reason!”

Bo said he’s doing a little better day by day. “I just struggle with the breathing right now. I will see the heart doctor again next week, and they will decide on the route we will take then. I have been able to visit with family and friends a lot lately, and my work family. I was surprised and appreciate all the people in our community who have reached out to me and Amy,” Bo said.

“There is no way I can ever repay them or Amy for what they did to save me.”
