Georgia Begins Distributing One-Time Tax Rebates – Payments Already Arriving

If you filed your Georgia taxes on time, you may already see a deposit labeled “GASTTAXRFD” in your bank account—part of the state’s $1 billion tax rebate program. Though it might look like a gas tax credit, the Department of Revenue explains that the code stands for “Georgia State Tax Refund.”

Under the rebate plan approved by the Georgia General Assembly in House Bill 112, eligible taxpayers will receive a one-time refund based on their 2023 filing status: $250 for single filers or married filing separately, $375 for heads of household, and $500 for those married filing jointly. To qualify, filers must have submitted their 2023 and 2024 returns by the May 1 deadline and had a tax liability in 2023.

Georgians can expect the refunds via direct deposit or mailed check, depending on the method they selected when filing. While some residents have already received their funds, the Department of Revenue advises that processing could continue for six to eight weeks.

The rebate program follows a series of tax relief efforts from Governor Kemp’s administration and coincides with a recent income tax rate cut from 5.39% to 5.19% under House Bill 111.

To check refund eligibility or payment status, residents can use the “Where’s My Surplus Refund” tool on the Georgia Tax Center website, where they’ll need their Social Security number and adjusted gross income.
