The Joy of the Journey
Finding Joy in the True Meaning of Christmas
A 2021 survey by the American Psychological Association found that 3 in 5 Americans are depressed and feel their mental health is negatively impacted by the holidays. About 89% of U.S. adults feel stressed during the holidays, with 41% reporting higher stress levels than at other times of the year. I believe that by embracing the true meaning of Christmas, we can overcome depression and stress.
As the holiday season approaches, many people look forward to gatherings with loved ones, festive decorations, and the spirit of giving. However, for some individuals, this time of year can exacerbate feelings of loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Thereare numerous reasons, but let’s look at a couple. It could be the pressure to create the perfect holiday experience, coupled with expectations of joy and celebration, which can intensify existing mental health struggles. It could also be that we feel like we have no one to share the joy of the Christmas season with.
During these challenges, it is essential to remember that depression is real, even during the holidays. The sadness and despair that individuals experience are valid and should not be dismissed or ignored. It is essential to acknowledge and address these emotions with compassion and understanding.
One way to navigate holiday depression is by shifting the focus from external pressures to the true meaning of Christmas. By embracing the spiritual significance of this season, individuals can find comfort, hope, and resilience in the face of their struggles. The following scriptures from can serve as a source of encouragement and inspiration:
The apostle Paul writes in 2 Timothy 1:7, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” During moments of anxiety and despair, it is important to remember that God has equipped us with the strength and courage to overcome our struggles. By leaning on His power and embracing self-control, we can navigate through difficult emotions with grace and resilience.
The apostle Peter writes to us, too, “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:7. In times of deep sorrow and loneliness, knowing we are not alone can be comforting. God’s love and care for us is unwavering, and we can find peacein casting our burdens upon Him. By surrendering our worries and anxieties, we can experience peace and stability amidst the chaos of the holiday season.
King David writes in Psalms 34:18, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” For those struggling with depression during the holidays, it may feel as though their spirits are crushed and their hearts are broken. However, the promise of God’s presence and salvation offers a glimmer of hope in the darkness. Individuals can find healing and restoration for their weary souls by seeking His comfort and companionship.
The last words I would like to share with you are the words of Jesus himself found in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” Amidst the chaos and busyness of the Christmas season, finding inner peace can seem like an impossible feat. However, Jesus’s peacetranscends worldly circumstances and provides a sense of calmness and serenity. We can experience a profound sense of peace that surpasses all understanding by surrendering our fears and anxieties to Him.
By reflecting on these scriptures and meditating on the true meaning of Christmas, we can cultivate a sense of gratitude, joy, and peace during the holiday season. Instead of being consumed by societal pressures and personal struggles, we can find peacein the eternal promises of God’s love and grace.
In conclusion, while depression is a real and challenging experience, it is possible to overcome its grip by focusing on what Christmas is truly about. By grounding ourselves in the spiritual significance of this season and leaning on the promises found in the scriptures, we can navigate through feelings of despair and loneliness with faith and resilience. May the true meaning of Christmas bring healing, hope, and renewal to all those struggling during this holiday season.
