At Chattooga High School Ms. Lisa Hughes is the Work Based Learning Coordinator (WBL), which is a program that works with students to gain employability skills and allows them time during the school day to work. This program gives juniors and seniors the opportunity to leave school one to two hours early from school to get to work.

The WBL program works closely with the Workforce Investment Opportunities Act (WIOA) program, coordinated by Mrs. Cindy Martin. Last year, Ms. Hughes and Mrs. Martin had one fantastic student that really stood out, Misty Henderson.

Other than being the star student in the Workforce Investment Opportunities Act (WIOA) program, she was an honor graduate, in the top ten of her graduating class, and she received an award in the HOSA club during her senior year.

According to Misty’s employer, Heather Casey, “Misty has shown all the traits that an employer looks to employ. She has a great positive attitude, she does not wait to be told what to do, but rather finds things that she can do within our store to improve it.”

Misty Henderson had received a lot of help from working with the WIOA program to improve her employability skills. She said, “the WIOA program has helped me succeed in every aspect of my work as well as the classroom environment. The past year in the program I learned more than I could have imagined by being in the program. I was able to leave school early to work which helped my workplace with scheduling as well as my flexibility with working. I learned responsibility, importance of punctuality, teamwork, hark work, etc. These skills I will carry over into college to obtain my bachelor’s in nursing. These skills will also aid in my success as a neonatal nurse. The program has opened so many doors for me to meet new people as well as setting me up for success in the next few years as I continue my education. Anyone in this program I hope would gain the same takeaways as I have. Thank you Mrs. Hughes for everything you helped me with such as college talks, employability skills, and the overall teachers of your amazing teaching.”
