The CHS Volleyball team has had an exciting start to the season this year. With a 6-2 record so far, they are on track to have a potentially record-breaking season.
Led by Head Coach Wes Maddux and Assistant Coach Chris Tallent, fans can expect some exciting things this year. With only two seniors this year, Libby Mobbs and Katie Dillard, this makes for a very young team. While it may be a younger group of girls, they have definitely put the work in to be very successful. Coach Maddux stated, “This is a completely different team.” With only 3 returning starters, Coach Maddux is looking for some of the young talent to step up. “I feel like this is the most athletic, skilled team I have had, but we are young and lack varsity experience. I’m going to use the first couple of weeks to get our young players as much court time as I can. We play in the toughest area/region in Class A, I believe the best seven teams in the state play in our Area. It’s going to be a grind all season, so we have to grow up fast.”Â
Senior All-Region player Libby Mobbs, a four-year starter, leads the team. “Libby has played in over 120 matches the last three seasons. She has been through a lot of tough battles on the court, and hopefully, her experience will guide this young team through the ups and downs of a season,” Maddux said.
The other two returning starters are All-State Junior Haley Maddux, who broke school two school records in kills last season, and Sophomore Maddie Wheat, who served as a setter on varsity her freshman year. “Haley is our most dangerous offensive weapon returning and Maddie is a versatile player who excels in all areas of the game,” Maddux said. Other players looking to make an impact on varsity are senior Katie Dillard, juniors Hannah Hasty and Hailey Morris, sophomores Alanna Sterner, Brooklyn Morris, Kaylee Dodd, Daysa Martin, Aurora Ramirez and freshman Gracelyn Rutledge, Bri Finley and newcomer Taniya Fife. Fans are seeing a whole new team on the court this year, and we can expect some great things!
While being on a team is all about growth and success as a person it is also equally important to play to win. Coach Maddux says, “I’m excited for this season. I’m excited to see this team grow throughout the year. Hopefully, we can do well enough to make it into the state playoffs and make a run at the state title.”
