Indians Back on the Field

Despite filling several leadership roles and holes on both sides of the ball, Chattooga coaches had plenty to be happy about after the initial contact. Offensively, Coach David Gann and Chris Hodges worked with a deep backfield and multiple looks at quarterback. Highly touted Junior, Devin Price, gives the offense a new look as he, and senior QB CJ Martin, line up at multiple positions including swapping out at wide out and quarterback. Sophomore Jamarious “Stank” Mosteller and Senior Dee Price are versatile players that will keep defenses on their heels. A massive offensive line anchored by 6’6″ 315 Senior right tackle Dustin Pope and 6’0″ 280 sophomore Center Devon Blackmon should be able to open some running lanes and allow for some pass plays to develop. Left Tackle Grayson Edgeman, 6’2″ 265 and sophomore Desmond Jones Left Guard 6’2″ 230 along with senior right tackle Cale Hudson 5’10” 190 finish out the dominating line. The OL averages 255 pounds, most high school teams don’t have a 250 pound player. Hudson has battled back to the starting line up after a devastating knee injury last season.

If the offensive line learns how to keep their defensive counterparts out of the backfield, other teams shouldn’t pose a significant threat. The Indians defense could easily be the best in a stacked Region 7-AA. As the only AA Region in the state to advance three teams to the second round of last year’s state playoffs, 7-AA opens up the season with those same three teams ranked in the top 20. This year’s Indian defense is led by senior defensive tackle, T.J. Adams. What he lacks in height, he more than makes up for in power, speed strength and sheer hustle. Adams is sure to attract a double team on almost every play and that should open up a field day for sophomore sensation, Luis Medina, and junior Izzy Dammond. Behind the fearsome front, the Indians boast a solid backfield that includes team leading tackler and all-round head hunter, Malachi Mack. Corners Drew Middleton and Danny Bare combine with linebacker Jackson Lowenberg to provide Chattooga with the hardest hitting defensive group in the region.

In addition to the surge in momentum on the Chattooga campus, Coach Charles Hammon and Coach David Gann have worked hand in hand over the off season with middle school coaches Jeff Bullen and Coach Thrasher to streamline their play calling and schemes. The middle school was on hand at CHS to practice along side their high school counterparts and were closely observed under the watchful eyes of Hammon and coaching legend Lynn Hunnicutt who is beginning his 45th season on the sideline.

Led by Rec league standout Devon Heroch and returning tailback/lineback LeShawn Lester, the middle school team should see a tremendous jump in offensive production as they adjust to segments of the high school playbook.

High School games will kick off with the annual Chattooga vs Trion scrimmage next Friday night at Sam McCain Stadium in Trion.
