6U Indians – Superbowl VIII Champions

Saturday morning the 6U Indians were given an escort out of town as the team traveled north on Highway 27 to Gordon Lee where they would face the Ridgeland Panthers for the third time this season in the Super Bowl.

The Indians only loss of the season was to the Panthers, and the Panthers only loss of the season was to the Indians. Ridgeland won the first game 24-20, Summerville won the the second game 30-18.

The Indians made it to the Super Bowl last season, only to lose a heartbreaker by one point in double overtime. On Saturday the team trailed 7-6 the entire game, and with only 1:12 left in the game, appeared to be on track to repeat the heartbreak when they turned the ball over on downs at the goal line.

However, fate had other plans for the 2017 Indians when, two plays later, Jamir Hughes sacked the Panthers quarterback in the end zone for a safety to put them ahead 8-7 with just:46 left on the clock. This year, it was the Indians who won the Super Bowl by one point. “It was a complete team effort in a tough battle,” Allen said.

Javion Cotton scored the only touchdown for the Indians.

“I’ve told these kids all year to play four complete quarters of football no matter what and they did just that. They never gave up,” head coach Will Allen said.
