Ossoff Refuting Perdue’s New TV Ad on Pre-Existing Conditions

Senator David Perdue recently released a new television ad proclaiming his support for ‘ensuring healthcare coverage for those with pre-existing conditions,’ but one of his opponents is pushing back on Perdue’s claims.

Perdue is set to square off against Democrat Jon Ossoff and Libertarian Shane Hazel in November and Ossoff and Perdue have spent substantial time and capital refuting the positions of the other. After the release of Perdue’s new TV ad this week, the Ossoff campaign issued a statement claiming Perdue has voted multiple times to “gut pre-existing conditions protections and leave millions of Americans without coverage.”

Ossoff’s campaign said:

In Senator David Perdue’s new ad, he claims “health insurance should always cover pre-existing conditions” – yet when asked if he supported the Republican lawsuit to strip away protections for those with pre-existing conditions, he replied “of course”. Perdue has voted multiple times to gut protections and kick hundreds of thousands of Georgians off their health insurance.

When recently asked if he supports the Trump administration-backed lawsuit to overturn the entire Affordable Care Act, including its protections for people with pre-existing conditions, Senator Perdue said he “supports the President and his attempt to do that.”  In 2017, Perdue voted for the disastrous Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) which would have allowed insurance companies to impose an “age tax” on older Georgians and gutted protections for people with pre-existing conditions. Perdue also voted to completely repeal the Affordable Care Act in just his first year of office.

Senator Perdue’s misleading ad is just the latest in his attempt to deceive Georgians on his record of pushing to take away their health care. He supports the sham Republican PROTECT Act,  which would allow insurers to charge women more than men and institute lifetime caps on coverage  and “does nothing to provide subsidies or cost-sharing mechanisms — meaning people with pre-existing conditions wouldn’t necessarily be able to afford those plans.”

“Senator Perdue is lying to his constituents in this misleading new ad. Perdue has voted repeatedly to gut protections for pre-existing conditions for Georgia families and continues to support the reckless GOP lawsuit to destroy the ACA, even during a pandemic,” said Braxton Brewington, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Senator Perdue’s attempt to deceive voters about his record of putting his corporate donors and the insurance industry first is why Georgians simply don’t trust him to safeguard their health care.”

The Democratic Party of Georgia used the ad as a discussion point against Congressman Doug Collins who is running for the Senate seat held by Kelly Loeffler. The party said:

Here’s the reality: not only would Republicans’ health care repeal bill have “weaken[ed] existing protections for people with pre-existing conditions,” but Collins has stood behind a reckless GOP-backed lawsuit to completely overturn the health care law including its critical protections for those with pre-existing conditions, praising it as a way to “overcome” the law.

“Congressman Doug Collins’ record speaks for itself: instead of working to protect access to health care, he’s spent years fighting to take it away,” said Alex Floyd, spokesman for the Democratic Party of Georgia. “Now Collins is trying to hide behind election year promises in a pandemic while running away from his toxic history of trying to weaken protections for 1.8 million Georgians with pre-existing conditions.”
