Convention Center Became Geek Mecca During Comic Con

If you haven’t been to a Comic Con, you’re probably thinking that it’s filled wall to wall with comics, as the name suggests. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Published books, artwork, crafts and games from 50 vendors  and 50 artists filled the convention floor at Jekyll Comic Con. Interactive 3D gaming system and virtual reality green screen photo booth added to the offerings. The Jekyll Island Convention Center was a pop culture mecca during the 2 day event. Just a couple of weeks away from Christmas, fans were buying presents for themselves and others. One patron remarked to another that she wished she had a couple hundred dollars more to spend. The concession booth was packed and in one of the ballrooms, people took a break from browsing to play some of their favorite games.

DK Pro Photography came from Jacksonville and others came from as far away as Cleveland, Ohio and the deep south of Alabama to display their art in various mediums and styles. Pop culture, fantasy, anime and even some steampunk added to the offerings. Iconic Glenn Fabry of Preacher, Hellblazor and Outlaw Nation met with his fans and Chris Hamer of UrbNPop came back with his latest art. Brunswick face painter Barbara Mazzotta kept a line of children, using their faces as canvases to create her designs.

Unusual versions of board games, action figures and other collectibles were in abundance in several of the booths. The vendors brought in new merchandise set neatly in glass store fixtures, making it easy to see the items to buy.

Comics were in abundance with Galactic Comics coming from Statesboro, others from Savannah and Jacksonville and Gary Gay from Mainland Photography (turned Mainland Comics). There must have been higher priced pieces but the $1 and $5 commons were the most popular with the crowd.
