In an unfortunate string of incidents involving prominent BHS athletes, the community is left to wonder about the quality of character among those being selected to participate in the school’s athletic program. Following last weeks arrest of D’Antne Demery, two new arrests involving athletes have been confirmed in an unrelated incident.
Kymani Durham and Christopher Reed have been arrested and charged with sexual acts with a fourteen year old girl. Although the acts took place off the campus of Brunswick High School, this is certainly not a good representation of the schools athletics department. Both students were considered “stars” of the state runner-up, BHS Pirates Basketball team. Durham was charged with aggravated child molestation and enticing a child for indecent purposes; while Reed was charged with aggravated child molestation as confirmed by the Sheriff’s office.
As students excel in athletics, they inadvertently become role models for other students, leaders among their peers, and icons in their community. It is so disappointing to see youth with such promise involved in behaviors that devastate their future, and leave such a negative mark on their school and community.
