Welcome to the weekend.
The work week is about to close and people across the state will go into full-blown weekend mode when the clock hits 5 p.m. today, maybe sooner.
The notebook will be put away until Monday, too.
Before that happens, though, it needs to be emptied.
That said, here are some short takes in regards to Georgia high school sports that have been gathered throughout the week.
* Parkview tops the charts: The girls soccer team at the Gwinnett County school was recognized this week at the MaxPreps’ national girls soccer champion.
The Panther finished the 2018 season with a 22-1 record while claiming the Class 7A state title.
Parkview finished ahead of another Georgia team, No. 2 Marist, and also third-ranked Broken Arrow (Okla.).
Another Georgia team, Milton, finished seventh in the final rankings.
Parkview also finished fourth in the USA Today/United Soccer Coaches Super 25 rankings.
This season’s state title was the ninth for Parkview. No other girls program in the state’s largest classification has won that many state championships.
Parkview head coach Judon Hambry is 5-for-5 in state finals matches, also winning crowns with the team from 2007-2009 and also 2013 before winning another one this spring.
*Knights honored: Several players from Frederica Academy’s state runner-up baseball team which won a region title this season have been named to the all-state and all-region teams.
Players earning both all-state and all-region honors were Trey Thompson, Eric McCall, Deke Jernigan and Nic Dixon.
Frederica players named all-region were Chandler Kicklighter, Cameron Gardner and Henry Jamieson.
The Knights compete in Region 2-3A in the Georgia Independent School Association.
*Coming back to Brunswick: Tom Bartolotta has been named the new head wrestling coach at Brunswick High.
Bartolotta was previously a head coach at rival Glynn Academy before going to Palm Coast High School in Florida where he built a championship progam.
* Corky Kell 7-on-7: Footballs will fill the air today at the Corky Kell 7-on-7 Invitational Tournament in Roswell.
Thirty-five teams, including many of the state’s top programs, are competing in the all-day tournament which serves as a prelude to the annual Corky Kell Classic which will kick off on Aug. 16 as the 2018 Georgia high school football season begins.
The teams are competing in pool play in the morning with a 35-team single-elimination tournament scheduled for the afternoon to determine the overall champion in this year’s invitational.
Among the teams competing are South Georgia powers Colquitt County and Lee County. Other teams include Tucker, Brookwood, Grayson, Gainesville, Norcross, Cartersville, Archer, McEachern and Buford.
* Good sports recognized: The Georgia High School Association announced this week the winners of the Cooperative Spirit Sportmanship Awards.
Fify-six teams – one from each of the eight regions in the state’s seven classifications – were chosen for the awards which are sponsored by Georgia’s Electric Membership Cooperatives.
The distinction was awarded to schools that demonstrated impeccable sportsmanship throughout the 2017-18 athletics year.
Area schools named for the honor included Camden County (Region 1, Class 7A), Bradwell Institute (Region 2, Class 6A), Ware County (Region 2, Class 5A), Long County (Region 2, Class 3A) and Clinch County (Region 2, Class A).
* Top Athlete Honor: Ware County’s Laci Jewell was recently honored as a State High School Athlete of the Year by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The freshman, who competes in riflery, won the individual championship at the all-classification state meet this year.
She helped Ware County to the team title with a championship-record score. The team crown was the school’s second in a row and third overall.
