Prep recap: Glynn girls soccer team makes way to Final Four

Glynn Academy had two soccer teams playing in the Elite 8 this weekend.

Now, the school has one of its teams going to the Final Four.

The Glynn girls punched their ticket to the Class 6A semifinals Friday with a hard-fought 1-0 win at Creekview in metro Atlanta.

Glynn will be making its first-ever trip to the Final Four and will host Pope at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Glynn County Stadium. Pope defeated Greenbrier 1-0 on Friday in their state quarterfinals contest.

The GA boys were also hoping to join the girls in the semifinals, but they suffered a tough 2-1 overtime loss to Alpharetta Saturday night at home in their quarterfinals matchup.

The Lady Terrors looked like they were headed to extra minutes against Creekview (15-4), but they got the game-winning goal Anna Meredith with just 2:30 left in the match to avoid overtime.

The Lady Terrors’ defense was again superb, getting several clutch saves from goal keeper Bliss Hutchings who recorded her 15th shutout of the season.

The Glynn girls are now 20-0 for the season.

The Lady Terrors advanced to the Elite 8 with a 2-0 victory over Heritage-Conyers on Tuesday at GC Stadium.

Glynn scored a pair of first-half goals and then relied on its strong defense to seal the victory over the final 40 minutes.

Sally Brock scored five minutes into the match for the Lady Terrors on an assist from Meredith.

Glynn’s second goal came in the 30th minute off a corner kick with Haley Williams scoring from close range for the 2-0 lead at intermission.

Heritage actually possessed the ball for much of the second half but the Glynn defense locked down its scorers and led the team to its 14th shutout of the season.

Meantime, the Glynn boys (18-3-2) looked like they may be going to penalty kicks to decide their game with Alpharetta (17-2-1) as the teams were still deadlocked at 1-1 inside the three-minute mark of the second and final extra period.

But the Raiders scored with just over two minutes to go after a free kick from near midfield. The second of two ensuing shots at the Glynn goal found the back of the net to allow the visitors to escape with the victory.

Alpharetta opened the scoring in the first few minutes of the game with a goal on a free kick.

Glynn drew even with 12:02 left in the first half on a goal by Clay Watkins.

The scored remained 1-1 until the Raiders got the game-winner in the final moments of the second five-minute overtime period.

The Terrors knocked off Forest Park 4-0 at home on Wednesday to earn a trip to the Elite 8.

Controlling the ball for much of the first 40 minutes, Glynn opened up a 2-0 advantage before halftime. Gray Sasser scored midway through the first half to get the Terrors on the scoreboard and Truman Antah scored the team’s second goal with nine minutes to go before the half.

The Terrors also kept possession for much of the second half.

Watkins dribbled from midfield and beat a pair of defenders before drilling home a goal for a 3-0 cushion with still 25 minutes to play.

Adam Williams scored off a pass from Antah with 12 minutes to go to punctuate the Glynn win.

Also in prep soccer this week, the Frederica Academy girls advanced to the quarterfinals in their Georgia Independent School Association tournament with a 2-0 win over Valwood at home on Thursday.

Mary Helen Veal and Bella Swinson scored the Frederica goals.

The Lady Knights will now host Holy Spirit Prep next week for a spot in the Final Four.

Also, the Frederica boys downed First Presbyterian 7-0 at home on Monday to close out the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record in region play this spring.

Jacob Myers led the Knights with three goals and also an assist.

On Friday, the Knights routed Tiftarea Academy 12-0 in their playoff opener.
