SHS Phoenix Volleyball advances to State Sweet 16

Sonoraville’s volleyball team is off to a great start in the AAA State Tournament with a sound win over Booker T. Washington (25-3, 25-7, 25-18).

Our “Sweet 16” match will be against Kendrick at SHS beginning at 5:00PM on Tuesday, Oct. 20th.

“We feel we are very prepared for State this year, and we certainly came out with authority tonight,” said Sonoraville’s Coach Trace Vaughn.  The Phoenix opened up a huge lead in the first set on Haley Smith’s school-record 21 consecutive service points.  Smith went on to record a second school-record, going 35-for-35 serving for the match. “We know serving and serve receive are crucial this time of year, so we spend much of our practices focusing on those areas,” added Vaughn.

Smith also added 7 aces and 4 digs to pace the Phoenix. Other stat leaders were Emalie Hicks with 12 kills and 3 aces; Taryn Hickey with 9 kills; Savannah Wilbanks with 22 assists, 2 kills and 2 aces; Maris Irick with 4 kills, 5 digs, and 3 aces on 19-of-19 serving; Gracen Hornbrook with 8 assists; Delaney Bell with 5 digs; Natalie Parker with 2 digs and 2 aces; Baylea Richards with 3 digs, and Kaytland Collum with 2 kills.

The Phoenix (40-8, 10-1) take a 16 game win streak into the AAA “Sweet 16” and play host Kendrick next Tuesday.
