In less than a month voters will chose a sheriff for Muscogee County, but in the all-important race to raise campaign funds two-time incumbent John Darr holds a commanding lead over three other candidates.
Darr, an independent, faces opposition from Democrat Donna Tompkins, Republican Mark LaJoye and write-in candidate Pam Brown.
The election will be held on Nov. 8.
In financial disclosure reports filed with the Muscogee County Board of Elections on Oct. 7, Darr showed he had raised $29,543.00 and still had $8,625.04 in the bank to spend between now and the Nov. 8 election.
Donna Tompkins
Tompkins, a 31-year veteran with the sheriff’s department, retired as a captain. She has raised $23,970.00 and has $6,922.49 on hand.
LaJoye, a former Columbus police officer, reports $3,278.00 in cash on hand but shows that he has only raised $2,000.00. This is his third race for sheriff.
Mark LaJoye
Brown, who spent 24 years with the sheriff’s department, missed the qualifying deadline to get on the ballot, forcing the former lieutenant to mount a write-in campaign. She has raised $5,300.00 and reported cash on hand of $524.00.
Pam Brown
This is not the first time Darr has faced challenges from LaJoye and Brown. Four years ago in the primary, Darr defeated Brown by 71 votes in a disputed race. In the general election, the incumbent ran away from LaJoye, collecting 76.2 percent of the votes.
