Rome beats Greenville 9-8 in wild walkoff fashion

A tough outing for Patrick Weigel, who gave up six runs (four earned) on six hits in six innings of work, would turn into a no decision when Rome’s offense picked up the slack in later innings.

In the game, Rome overcame deficits of 0-3, and later 4-6.  Two big four-run innings, and a wild walk-off run in the ninth would give the Braves a 9-8 victory.  Chad Sobotka picked up the win in relief, his first of the season.

The game ended when a would be double play was broken up in the bottom of the 9th inning, scoring Baez.

Luke Dykstra grounded into a force out, shortstop Jeremy Rivera to second baseman Luis Alejandro Basabe. Leudys Baez scored with Ray-Patrick Didder out at second base, luke Dykstra advanced to first on a throwing error by second baseman Luis Alejandro Basabe.  Greenville’s coaching staff and players were vocal about their feelings that the broken up throw should have been covered under MLB’s new player protection rule dealing with hard slides.

Greenville’s manager Derren Fenster had to be separated from the umpires by security, who were eventually escorted to the clubhouse.
